Buy or Trade Framemaker 7.0 or 7.2 license for Framemaker 8.0

I’m amazed to hear that Adobe has opted to force all of their users to Framemaker 8.0, including not even selling Framemaker 7.2 or Framemaker 7.0 any more. I know at least one large company that’s been bitten by this– they just got through the 7.2 upgrade cycle and have NO intention of going for Framemaker 8.0. They will be looking at other options, or at least trying to make 7.2 work for them, because really, nothing else makes sense. The upgrade costs are just too high.

The problem, though: whenever they hire a new writer, they can’t get a Frame 7.2 license for that writer– they’re stuck. There’s nothing they can do without violating the license one way or another…

There must be a lot of companies in a similar position. My thought: perhaps there should be a Framemaker 7.2 license after-market, i.e. companies that have either abandoned Framemaker 7.2 or businesses that buy Framemaker 8.0, and can now legally sell off their Framemaker old version licenses and media to people who need the 7.2 version now.

I think this would make a lot of sense. In fact, if Madcap Software had the nerve, they could launch such a license swap program and drive Adobe nuts… On the other hand, if Blaze is ready soon, this will be a tremendous opportunity for Madcap to find Framemaker switchers ready to migrate to a new (modern) product instead of sticking with old software.
