EmDEX Framemaker WYSIWYG Indexing Tool
While Framemaker creates fine indexes for book-length documents, the standard UI for managing index markers is clumsy, both in structured and unstructured Framemaker.
To improve the index marker creation process, EmDEX has created an embedded indexing tool plugin for Framemaker 5.5, 6, 7, 7.1 and 7.2 to enable the dynamic creation of indexes with real-time preview as you add index items.
emDEX provides:
- sizeable marker edit window with user-defined formatting buttons, font control, and auto-completion of marker text
- real-time visual updating of the emDEX index window AS YOU ARE MARKING ENTRIES, allowing you to view and modify entries as you go
- real-time formatting of locators and “See”, “See also” references
- visual index creation for single documents or books
- global search and replace
- one-step range marking by highlighting text
Compared to the usual way of creating indexes, this looks extremely efficient. Of course, there are those of us who are lazy about adding index items to our Framemaker books, but perhaps by lowering the bar on a tedious task, EmDex will contribute to quality documentation.
