Framemaker Version 8: Rumors Wanted

Framemaker is still in widespread use, with many users upgrading to Frame version 7.2 for better support for structured XML documents, multi-level undo (long, long overdue) and other new capabilities.

But will this be the end of the line for Framemaker? or is a Framemaker 8 release in our future? and if so, what features would it have to have, to be a compelling update for the WYSIWYG book publishing champion editor? And what platforms would it have to support? Linux? Mac? (Windows is a no-brainer.)

Let us know what you think. Tell us about your wishlist or, better still, what you hear from the rumor mill about what Adobe is cooking up in their labs…

This interview leaves the impression that there’s definitely more work going on…

The FrameMaker team has been hard at work since the release of version 7.2. In recent conferences we’ve been talking about how we’re tracking some key trends in technical communications, including increased globalization and localization of technical content, increased use of structured content and XML, and increased integration of rich media, such as 3D content and animation. Our current assumption is that the next major release of FrameMaker will be in the first half of 2007, although Adobe has made no formal announcements at this point.

The Adobe Team is hard at work on the next several versions of Adobe FrameMaker (according to my crystal ball). In fact, I’d venture to guess you’ll see some new-and-improved features as well as more support for standards and connectivity to other systems (content management anyone?)

Of course, I’m no Miss Cleo (although I do have a crystal ball), so I’m not 100% sure what the laboratory is cooking up today. But, if I had to put my money on it, I’d wager FrameMaker is going to be around for quite a while.
